Everybody wants to be successful but a lot people want to do one big thing that will change their life forever, instead of focusing on a consistent effort to be productive, which is what guarantees success.
Yes luck exists but one cannot depend on luck. The very nature of luck is that it is out of your control. Instead, if you want to guarantee success, you might want to focus on what you can control.
In this article, I’m going to share some tips on how to focus on the things you can control which would actually make you a more productive individual and therefore guarantee success.
The first way to create focus is to set a clear goal. There is a saying—greatness starts with a goal. If you don’t set a clear goal, you won’t be able to focus. Imagine playing football or any other sport and there is no goal post. How do you expect to score or to win? Without setting a clear goal, there will be no clear direction to move towards. It will also be difficult to prioritize—this is called a scattergun approach, like shooting without a target. Also you should categorize your goals into short-term goals and long-term goals. Make sure you’re doing something everyday towards your goals. Do something, no matter how small. If you keep doing something everyday, a certain compounding effect will kick-in and not too long from now you’ll realize how much you have approached that goal or even reached and exceeded it.
Secondly, in order to improve focus and guarantee that you are being productive, you must track your progress. If you don’t track your progress, there will be no accountability and without accountability you will not notice your growth and how far you have come.. Give yourself a task everyday and if you keep finishing the day’s task you’ll find out that you have become more productive. This is why you should track your progress, so you will know when you are becoming more productive. If you don’t track your growth, no matter how small, it will be hard for you to keep motivating yourself to be productive. Nobody wants to keep doing things that aren’t yielding fruit so make sure that you give yourself a pat on the back whenever you notice you have made progress, no matter how small. This will keep you motivated. Progress motivates.
Finally, find time to relax and reward yourself for your hard work. There’s a popular saying—All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy; and all play and no work makes Jack an empty toy. If you don’t find time to relax, you may experience burn out. Break down your big goals into smaller tasks and make sure you find time to de-stress if not your body and mind may rebel and you may become tired, lethargic, and dull. Make sure you give yourself a treat for all the hard work you have done. For instance, let’s say you like to have a bottle of beer everyday. What you can do is to keep it till the end of the day or week and promise yourself that if you do your tasks well, you can take an extra bottle or even add Suya (grilled meat). This will motivate you and when you drink and eat the Suya you will enjoy it more and without guilt because you know you had a productive day. You can do this at the end of the day or week depending on how long you can delay gratification. The longer you delay the gratification, the more satisfaction you will feel when you finally indulge. It is just like having sex. If you learn how to delay gratification, you will last longer in bed and when you eventually have the orgasm it will feel much better than the orgasm of two seconds. And the woman will be grateful to you too that you were able to hold on longer and you will not feel that guilt. This will also train your brain to look forward to completing its task before getting its reward. After rewarding yourself, you will be refreshed and find more energy and focus to go after your goals again.
