Travelling with toddlers can be a pain. New sights and sounds can be overwhelming for a young child, and vacation anticipation can quickly turn to tantrums if you’re not prepared. Here are 10 Tips For Travelling With Toddlers.
1. Choose a family-friendly destination
Skip the crowded tourist spots and instead opt for a place where people are used to having kids with them.
2. safety first!
Always make sure the child seat is properly secured in the car. Also, use a removable shade to keep the sun out.
3. Pack entertainment
“The best tips for entertaining your child in the car and in the hotel room are favourite books, games and toys,” says Nancy Wolpert of Nickelodeon Home Entertainment. For a comprehensive entertainment program, she recommends two new DVDs that feature a collection of kids’ favourite shows. “The Nick Picks and Nick Jr. Favorites DVDs will keep kids entertained for hours,” Wolpert promises.
4. Plan stopovers
If you’re travelling by car, break up the monotony by taking a break every few hours (or more often if needed). Kids need to stretch out after being cooped up in the car for a while. Bring a ball to kick or throw around for these breaks.
5. Be flexible
Set realistic expectations and let your child take the experience at his or her own pace. You may want to limit your activities to one per day. Otherwise, you could end up with an overstimulated toddler.
6. Bring water and plenty of snacks
Fruit, granola bars, mini juice boxes and small cereal boxes make great healthy snacks.
7. Bring a beloved item
A blanket or stuffed animal will help your child feel safe and secure. Make sure you have a spare on hand, too. This will save you some grief if the original is lost.
8. Start and end the day early
Children are most alert in the morning, so plan accordingly.
9. Stick to your routine
If your child eats, naps and plays at the same time every day, that may be all they need to feel comfortable in a new environment.
10. Take lots of pictures
You are only young once, so enjoy every moment!
